DAVID MAISEL/BLACK MAPS

DAVID MAISEL/BLACK MAPS: American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime is a survey of David Maisel’s major aerial photography projects. In these, Black Maps leads the viewer on a hallucinatory journey through terrains that have been radically altered by environmental degradation and transformed by human agency. Maisel’s large-scale aerial photographs frame the issues of contemporary landscape with equal measures of documentation and metaphor, beauty and despair.

Learning to See

In his publication, The Interaction of Color, artist and teacher Josef Albers argued that there is no way to understand colors except in relationship to one another. A radical departure from conventional art education when first published in 1963, Albers’s book is now considered a classic. This installation of selections from SMoCA’s permanent collection celebrates the artist’s legacy and the 50th anniversary of his seminal publication.

Stocked: Contemporary Art from the Grocery Aisles

Shopping carts, candy wrappers, grocery lists, paper bags, milk bottles, and cereal boxes—these ordinary items emerge as objects for artistic investigation in Stocked. This exhibition presents the work of contemporary artists who keenly and cleverly interrogate the grocery items we purchase, the environments in which we shop, the social frameworks we encounter there, and the cultural norms that inform our habits of consumption.

Organized by the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita State University. The exhibition has been generously supported by the Lois Kay Walls Foundation Trust, Spirit Aerosystems, and Delta Dental. From cholla buds to Tater Tots, this interactive evening brings together performers, farmers, artists, ethnobotanists and culinary experts to share personal stories about food, place, environment, culture and health to explore our complex relationship with what we eat. In conjunction with the summer exhibition "Stocked: Contemporary Art from the Grocery Aisles."
